Masjid Jamek Sungai Tiram is an active mosque in Penang. The mosque was originally opened in 1976. The mosque has undergone a series of expansions of the prayer space. Due to the fact that this mosque is located in a strategic place, which is located near the Penang International Airport and near the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, this mosque is the focus of the public, tourists, and workers from the area.
In 2015, planing for the expansion of this mosque was done. The development of this mosque which is in the Sungai Tiram development area developed by Koperasi Tunas Muda Sungai Ara Berhad. This project has received cooperation between the Masjid Jamek Sungai Tiram Committee, Majlis Agama Islam Negeri Pulau Pinang and the developer and was built by Syarikat Nyaman Sdn. Bhd.
The development component of this mosque is the expansion of the main prayer space from a capacity of 1150 people to a capacity of 3360 people. Apart from that, this mosque also contains classrooms, a library, administrative office, canteen, and toilets that are friendly for the disabled. This mosque prioritizes comfort for users who visit this mosque. The Penang Government hopes that this mosque will be an example to other mosques in Penang in terms of mosque development.
The inauguration ceremony of the new building of this mosque was officiated by TYT Tun Dato Seri Utama (Dr) Haji Abdul Rahman Bin Haji Abbas, Yang Dipetua Negeri Pulau Pinang on 10 January 2020 /14 Jamadilawal 1441H. With this ceremony, this mosque was renamed Masjid Al-Mustagfirin Sungai Tiram.
